Boi Akih like to describe their music as folk music. Folk music in the sense that Thelonious
Monk had in mind when he commented to Bob Dylan “ we all play folk music”.
The group creates its own vibrating universe inspired and infused by various kinds of music
(from contemporary to roots, singer songwriter and improvised music). They dig into undercurrents
and expand the boundaries of traditions they meet so, that these melt together. In
his compositions Niels Brouwer search for the complexity in the simplicity and simplicity in
complexity.
Just like the mixing of Monica Akihary’s Moluccan and Niels’ Dutch heritage, the music of Boi
Akih is a prism of various roots and rays. Colors and sounds come together along improvisational
pathways within a strong compositional structure.
Boi Akih performs in different line-ups expanding from duo to a six-piece band. Each of these
configurations has its own sound due to the interplay of members searching for their own
origin during an ongoing adventurous voyage.
